Toddlerism

Elijah's speaking is getting much better at more than 2 and a half, so I want to write down all the cute things he says that I will miss. Nicollette said a few of these too.

Matato = Potato
me pummin' = I'm coming too/ I'm coming with you
'cado, my'cado. a'cado = avocodo
me do that thing = I want to do it myself, let me do it myself
it too heaby = it's too heavy (you carry it)
me too also  (he says these words correctly but says too and also together even though I have tried to explain it is one or the other since they mean the same thing)
Lub you = Love you
Nikki Let = Nicollette
None = can't, don't - as in: Quentin none play with that, or None Nikki do it

He mostly says it correctly now but for a long time Quentin sounded more like Poonten

Q is 9 mos

So I am still horrible about keeping this updated often, but I do love having it to look back at. I have been keeping  a list of things I want to update to the blog on a digital post it note on my computer so I dont forget something in between posts. I am still taking monthly photos (ok not always on the exact day but close and he is hard to get a photo he just wants to move), now I just need to get them all on the computer and then on the blog into several posts.

Quentin in now 9 months. So mobile, crawling at super speed it seems, pulls up to standing often with just one hand, and then can sit back down, starting to do some pretty confident cruising along the furniture. Should be too long before he is standing unassisted, he might turn out to be the earliest walker of the three kids.

Around 7 months he starting talking more, saying ba-ba often we felt towards daddy, then moved on to saying ma-ma and da-da closer to 8 mos. His siblings have taught him to roar like lion and a few other strange noises. Recent we were playing duckies in the bath and he starting saying something that sounds like quack, and now says it all the time which is kinda funny. Another funny thing he does is blowing raspberries on my knee. He make plenty of cute faces but his most common is sucking in his bottom lip.

Still no teeth just but still the occasional teething pain and his bottom gums just look like they hurt. A skim through this blog show he is little behind his siblings in this area. Started on Cheerios and Baby Puffs but he doesnt seem too into or good at eating them, more of them end up in his chair or under it. But they help keep him busy in a high chair.

Sleep is still an issue, some nights he goes into his crib peacefully and spend at least the some of the evening and first part of the night in his crib and others he spends all evening sleeping held on the couch and most of the night in our bed. So going to sleep on his own in his crib doesn't happen but a good night is one where he spends most of it in his crib. And getting him back into his crib after a wake up to nurse is another challenge.

He is at that age where he doesn't want new people which was no good for being in the nursery during VBS, lots of crying. Elijah did fine in the nursery during VBS minus really wanting to just be with the bigger kids. Nicollette did really well for her first year, minus the end of the first day when she was almost inconsolable about not seeing me all morning even though I explained before I was with one of the older groups. She did well with learning the songs to sing in church the Sunday after it was over. As cute as they were, I am glad not to have to listen to them anymore.

Nicollette and Elijah are letting Quentin play with or around them more but still have to be reminded to be gentle. Also working on keeping "not-baby-safe" toys away from Q when they are gotten out, as much as possible I try to keep to safer toys like Little People sets or the LeapFrog Animals. Elijah just had his first haircut, just a trim to get it off his neck and ears. Nicollette still doesn't want hers cut. She starts her second year of preschool soon, going three mornings a week. Hoping to work in still going to the forest and library most weeks.

Nicollette is always stalling at bedtime, being able to get herself ready for bed but not doing any of it on her own but her bedtime stories are very important to her.  Elijah is usually a little easier minus tantrums about wanting mommy. He usually goes to bed in his toddler bed and stays there. Occasionally waking up  in the evening or night and going to the gate at the door to have someone tuck him back in.  The hardest part is just two of us juggling giving each of the three of them personal time at bedtime. Even more challenging if Patrick is out of town.

June was spent at the Forest and Library summer programs. Ending the month with her week of "princess ballerina" class.  Our major trip for this summer was a roadtrip up to Indiana around the 4th of July to clean out storage and see family. Bedtime in hotels was the hardest part. They did pretty well with the driving but they did get a little antsy at times. Then the week of VBS.

All of the summer programs are over and School year programs dont start for a few weeks. The last thing we have for the summer is a weekend trip planned for the Iowa State fair.

Now I need to make a new post about all the toddlerism that Elijah is outgrowing. You know that cute things they mispronounce  that you will miss later.

Q is 7 mos old

So I'm still horrible at updating this, but while I'm thinking of it I will get the words and do the photos later.

In just the last month or so Quentin has learned to really crawl and sit up unsupported and recently pulls himself up requiring his crib to be lowered. He crawls pretty fast making across the (small) playroom in a blink it seems. We are letting him play on the floor more just trying to watch out for the bigger kids and their toys.

Still no teeth but occasional teething pain and lots of drooling and "chewing"

Starting foods seems to have gone well and basically following a similar list to his siblings (I kept a list of first food with each to make it easier to keep track of each single food they had already) He can be a little piggy sometimes. Both eating a good amount and making quite a mess sometime.

Bedtime is a unique challenge since we want him to move the crib in Elijah's room but of course being in our bed or the Rock N Play is more comfortable so the transition continues slowly so there isn't too much crying to wake Elijah (who didnt handle this transition well either - the move to toddler bed was much easier) Trying to work on more and more time sleeping in the crib. Probably doesn't help that the crib is where he plays while everyone gets dressed in the morning. I just read an article that talked about the Rock N Play being a dangerous crutch, I dont really agree with the dangerous part especially since we don't have the one with the plushy insert, but it is hard to take them from the comfortable cozy sleep space after just a few months as planned to the flat stark crib.

Took the chair out Elijah's room since he kept climbing on it, so there is actually more room to play a little in there with the toys I have stored on the bookcase, which just makes getting everyone dressed in the morning take that much longer, but comes in handy if I need to start some laundry or something.

Nicollette finished Preschool and Sunday School for the year. Signed her up for a week of a "princess ballerina" camp at the local dance academy to see how she likes dance. Signed up for the library reading program (which since none of them can read, just means reading to them for 20 minutes each day which we usually already do at bedtime), looking forward to summer library storytimes. Plan to spend some time at the forest. This will be Nicollette's first year for VBS and I volunteered to help. This summer, need to work in all of us walking more to build up endurance for our family vacation this winter.

Oma and Opa visited just before Memorial Day and the forecast was pretty iffy with several thunderstorms forecast but ended up being ok for some outdoor sightseeing at the zoo to see the elephant and some of the new Africa exhibit, a walk on the Bob bridge after a stop at the Lewis and Clark trail site building, eating at the Bohemian Cafe (set to close business soon), and checking out the opening day of a new exhibit at the Durham.

Q is 4 mos old

I have been horrible about updating this.

Quentin is 4 months old now. He rolls both front to back and back to front but since he doesnt do tummy time as often as I would like (hard to work that in with a toddler and preschooler running around him), he can roll to his back when he decides he is done with tummy time but sometimes gets stuck when he rolls from his back to his tummy in his crib and can't seem to remember how to get back, crying for help when he has had enough. He smiles a toothless grin that I can't seem to catch on camera. He has the cutest curly cue belly button. He is usually pretty mellow still although he has had a few instances of prolonged screaming in my ear to which we can't find a cause and end up treating him for teething, gas, and anything else just to calm him down. Luckily he is just as, if not more, go with the flow like Elijah and often naps while I babywear him to run errands with Elijah while big sister, Nicollette, is in preschool two days a week.

Elijah is two and just a helpful and sweet big brother, wanting to give kisses and baby snuggles and hold hands at his own naptime. He is saying more words and using all the cutest toddlerism, especially when he uses his best manners of "peas" and "tanks." While he occasionally says Quentin correctly, he usually calls him baby "Pootin" since he has a hard time with his name.

Nicollette seems to be doing well with preschool. Since we often speak to her like an adult and just wait for her to ask us to explain bigger words, she says some pretty funny things sometimes, repeating in the correct context things we often say to her. Funny just because she says things you don't expect a 4 year old to say.

p.s. I will try to remember to update with photos whenever I get around to putting them from the camera onto the computer

And baby makes a family of 5

Quentin Ezra was born Oct 28th at almost 8 in the morning.  He is our only morning baby. We decided not to stay in the hospital the whole time we are allowed since Nicollette and Elijah both had coughs and we didnt want to bring to the hospital because of that. They were excited to meet their new little brother at home.

big brother and big sister

Quentin is doing well. But adjusting to life with a newborn, a toddler and a preschooler is a learning experience, especially since daddy had to work unusually late most of his first week of life.

one week old

I have updated our Shutterfly Sharesite if you want to see more pictures. I will probably add some more posts to this blog and back date them so they are in chronological order since I havent been keeping this blog very updated in the last year.

Update

SO I haven't kept this as updated as I would have hoped, but I love having it to look back at. It is just so busy with a toddler and a preschooler and another on the way to find time to type or even keep up with getting photos off the camera. Yes, another one is due in late October although I keep joking that with my track record that I wouldn't be surprised by early November birth.

Elijah still doesn't talk too much, but his sister was the same way so we aren't too worried.  He seems to be working on those last canine tooth and according to his doctor that just leaves his 2 year molars. Nicollette moved to a twin bed so we moved Elijah to her toddler bed but in his room at least until he is better about staying in it and not bugging his sister. There isn't much room in his sisters room anyway since we opted to for a trundle bed to make it easier to climb into. But he can easily stay in his room until the new baby is probably six months old or so since they usually stay in the Rock n Play in our room that long.

Nicollette will be starting preschool in the fall. So hard to believe how much she has grown up, although she has her days when she doesn't act it :D

Elijah turns ONE!

Our sweet little boy is one year old, not a baby anymore, now he is toddler. He can crawl super fast, and he stands, and walk a few steps on his own. He want to climb in  and on all the toy storage containers. He is starting to hold his own against his sister when she plays a little rough. He may only have 5 teeth but he likes to try to eat some of the same food as everyone else.
